Barton Academy holds first

Open House since Exterior Renovation, May 21, 2016
Mobile was anxious to see the gleaming new restoration of Barton Academy's exterior up close! More than 300 people showed up at a recent open house to tour the landmark building and learn about plans for Barton's future.

The Barton Academy Foundation and the Mobile County Public School System held an open house on Saturday, May 21. Barton and the adjacent Yerby School building were open for tours.
“This was our first open house since the school system’s $3.5 million exterior restoration, and Mobile showed up in force to celebrate the impressive facelift,” Barton Academy Foundation President Jaime Betbeze said. “People also saw that much work remains as we raise funds to renovate the interior for use as a world studies academy.”
Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies, an advanced signature academy for grades six through nine, will promote project-based learning, global understanding, international relations and foreign language skills through rigorous coursework aligned with international standards.
Representatives from the school system and  the foundation were on hand to answer questions about the renovation and future plans. Representatives of Ben Radcliff Construction, the contractor for the exterior renovations, were available to discuss the project.

As usual special tours of Barton’s iconic dome room, offered for a $10 donation, drew the most excitement. Reaching the dome requires a rigorous climb and some dexterity, but almost 100 visitors were rewarded with amazing views of the city.

Special thanks to our many volunteers including a group from the Daughters of the American Revolution Preservation Committee and the Mobile Historic Development Commission.
